Is this the final Independence Day ?

Happy final Independence Day everyone.

I don’t think that this has to be our final Independence Day but we damn well better start behaving as though it could be.

This nation was founded on a very special and revolutionary idea:

that all men are created equal.

That they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.

That idea was set out in the Declaration of Independence, unanimously adopted by the Congress of the United States of America on July 4, 1776.

In that document the members of that Congress declared that government’s main job was to secure for the people those unalienable rights.

They also declared that “whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it and institute new government laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.”

Well I see a government right now enforcing a system in which those who are born with great wealth are not considered equal to the rest of us.

I see a Supreme Court declaring that the laws do not apply to those who have once possessed great political power the same way they do to the rest of us.

I see state governments being permitted to deny unalienable human rights to some of their citizens.

The members of the Congress of the United States of America in 1776 would call that “a history of repeated injuries and usurpations all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny”

By my reckoning that history of repeated injuries and usurpations has been going on now for 40 years. And it’s getting a whole lot worse. So much so that if we allow the forces of despotism to take power this November it’s gonna be mighty hard to stop.

In the Declaration of Independence it says when there is “a long train of abuses and usurpations” designed to reduce the people “under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty to throw off such government and to provide new guards for their future security.”

This is not the first time in our history that our government has gone astray. And in the past we the people have been able to correct things by voting to keep the human rights abusers, the authoritarians and the scalawags out of office.

And we have a chance to do that again this November.

But some branches of our government have already been taken over by people who clearly do not believe in equality and human rights. People who think that government’ s job is to keep the people in line and subservient to wealthy aristocrats and corporations, theocratic dogmatists or authoritarian conmen.

And if they are able to come to complete power this November we will no longer be able to fix the problem by altering our accustomed form of government. We will have been reduced to absolute tyranny and our only recourse will be revolution.

Altering our form of government through the electoral process is a whole lot easier than abolishing and replacing despotism once it has gotten into complete power.

My fond hope this Independence Day 2024 is that we will succeed in November and be able to celebrate again in 2025.

And I hope you all share that hope.

About 40 years ago, some Republicans started saying that they had a better idea for how to run our country and create a better life for our people.
They wanted to change the way we operate in our country.
They called it the Republican revolution.

There was a whole lot of rhetoric, but the major points were pretty simple.
They wanted to:
Cut taxes for the rich people
They wanted to:
deregulate business; allow large corporations and other economic entities to do whatever they wanted.
They wanted to:
Send more of our young men to prison and brutalize many of the rest of them by having them fight in endless unnecessary wars.
And they wanted to:
Reverse the advances which had been made by the civil rights, women's, antiwar, environmental, and gay rights movements as well as other progressive ideas of the 60s and 70s.

They said that this would make life better for everyone.
Well we've been letting them do those things for 40 years now.
And it hasn't worked.

Oh things are better ------ for rich people.
Corporations and other large economic entities are making huge profits.
But in most ways, average Americans are much worse off than we were before this Republican revolution.

The theory of this Republican revolution was that rich people and powerful corporations should have more power
and the elected representatives of the American people should have less power.

They said the government was the enemy.
They also said that if rich people and corporations had more money to spend they would spend it on things which would benefit everybody.

That theory was called “tinkle-down economics”.
Back in 1980, Poppy Bush (who later changed his mind) called it "voodoo economics".
It was pretty easy to figure out right then that it wasn't going to work.
But just to prove a point we let them keep doing it for the last 40 years – – – and guess what:
it hasn't worked.

I call this whole thing Ronnie Rodeo's Reactionary Rapepublicans Revolution.
And I talk about it a lot and some of my other videos.
If you want to hear more details go look at some of them.
Right now I'm just going to point out a few simple facts:
40 years ago an average American family could have a pretty good life on what one adult made working a single full-time job..
They could even own their own home.
40 years ago a college student could afford to go to school and by working part-time during the year and full-time during the summer, and graduate with little or no debt.
40 years ago if you worked hard and played by the rules
you could pretty much guarantee that you could provide your children with a better life than yours.
We call that the American dream.
But then the Republicans announced their revolution – –
their tinkle down economics – –
their Contract on America – –
their wars against drugs, against terrorism, against human rights and freedom.

And now, 40 years later, are we better off? – – I say no!

The Republican revolution was a really bad idea.
It's time for counterrevolution – – now!

Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin want us to hate each other.

If humanity is divided into groups of people who hate each other, dictators flourish.

If the people of the United States of America are divided into groups that hate each other, our Democratic Republic can be replaced by a dictatorship.

Not all Democrats are good and not all Republicans are bad.
But if you are voting in an election where one candidate is preaching love and the other hate;
Or if one is preaching hope and the other fear;
the choice is clear.

Let's make this the election in which we reject fear, anger and hatred;
and save the American dream for our children and grandchildren.
